2016 Toyota Mirai Fuel-Cell Sedan

Hydrogen vehicles are out on the roadways.  However, lack of a refueling infrastructure is the largest road block.  The largest infrastructure in the United States is currently on the West Coast.  The Toyota Mirai is a fuel-cell electric vehicle that is for sale in the United States.

Hydrogen tanks are required to meet the same crash test requirements just like Propane and CNG.  One difference is the Pressure Relief Devices (PRD) for Hydrogen Vehicles.  The PRD (also called a Hydrogen Vent Stack) on hydrogen tanks in vehicles are designed to vent toward the pavement underneath the vehicle.  Responders need to stay away from the PRD when a loud hissing sound is heard.  Keep the venting direction if the vehicle is rolled over resting on the side or roof. These vehicles are new, but Moditech updated their Crash Recovery System with all the information that repsonders need.  The red arrow in the Crash Recovery System screenshot below show the location of the PRD on the tanks.
